Juan Camilo Villa, winner of the “Folkwang Preis Award” for the Best Jazz Soloist, was born on June 11th 1983 in Barranquilla. The Colombian Jazz bassist and bass teacher is based in Cologne, Germany since 2004. In the same year won the National German Young Jazz Award with his band “Latin Sampling”. He has been actively touring with prestigious International artists from the Jazz/Latin scene, such as: Hector Martignon, Edmar Castañeda, Samuel Torres, Dafnis Prieto, Michael Philipp Mossman, Lily Dahab, Marialy Pacheco, Jocelyn B. Smith among all. He performed with WDR Big Band, NDR Big Band and WDR Rundfunk Orchester in concerts which were televised on German television channels “ARTE” and “WDR”.
Camilo got his Diploma as a Jazz Bassist in the “Folkwang University of the Arts” in Essen, Germany. In addition to his performing career, Camilo has also worked as a bass teacher in the World Music Department of the “Codarts University of the Arts” in Rotterdam (2017-2019). The diversity of styles he plays gave him the opportunity to play in all kind of formats in Jazz festivals & clubs touring the world, from all Europe to Argentina, Peru and Colombia in Latinamerica, as well as China and Japan.
