Juan Camilo Villa, winner of the Folkwang Preis Award for Best Jazz Soloist, was born in Barranquilla, Colombia, on June 11, 1983. The Colombian jazz bassist and educator has been based in Cologne since 2004. In the same year, he won the National German Young Jazz Award with his band Latin Sampling.

Since then, Camilo has toured internationally with renowned artists from the jazz, pop, and Latin music scene, including Hector Martignon, Edmar Castañeda, Samuel Torres, Dafnis Prieto, Michael Philip Mossman, Vento Terral, Lily Dahab, Marialy Pacheco, and The Heavytones, as well as productions such as The Voice of Germany and tours with Teddy Teclebrhan, among many others.

He has also performed with the WDR Big Band and the WDR Rundfunkorchester in concerts broadcast on German television, including ARTE and WDR.

Juan Camilo earned his diploma in Jazz Bass from the Folkwang University of the Arts. Alongside his performing career, he has also been active as an educator, serving as a bass teacher in the World Music Department at Codarts University of the Arts from 2017 to 2019.

His stylistic versatility has led him to perform in a wide range of musical settings, from intimate jazz clubs to major international festivals, touring extensively throughout Europe, North and South America — including Argentina, Peru, and Colombia — as well as China and Japan.
